On November 23, 2012 at 9:48am, Galloway Police Corporal Gerald Houck observed a suspicious vehicle (2012 Mazda 6, 4 dr grey with NY plates) parked at a residence near the intersection of Moss Mill Rd and Leipzig Ave. Cpl Houck stopped and made contact with the driver who had exited his vehicle. The driver claimed to be lost and asked for directions. The male then left in the vehicle and struck a tree while attempting to exit driveway. Cpl Houck then found the vehicle had been reported stolen from Hammonton, NJ on October 30th. The vehicle turned West on Moss Mill Rd and fled at a high rate of speed. Cpl Houck located the vehicle a short time later just East of Bremen Ave. The driver had lost control as he travelled through a curve in the road, crossed the center line and struck several trees. The driver had fled on foot. Several units responded and the male was observed a short distance away emerging from a wooded area along Moss Mill Rd by Officer Daniel Choe. The male was taken into custody. The vehicle was towed from the scene with extensive damage.


The male was identified as John E. Hamlett age 30 of Newfield, NJ. Hamlett was charged with Possession of Stolen Property (2012 Mazda) and Obstruction of Justice. He was also charged with several motor vehicle offense; Reckless Driving, Driving While Suspended, Leaving the Scene of an Accident (x2) and Failure to Report an Accident (x2). His bail was set by JMC Howard Freed at $50,000 cash. Hamlett was transported to ACJF.
