Police Officer Position Information
General Information
Galloway Township is located in Atlantic County, New Jersey 10 miles
West of Atlantic City. The Township encompasses 115 square miles
And has an approximate population of 40,000 residents. Galloway
Township is residential/rural in character with a diverse population.
There are several public and private schools within Galloway Township,
including a large public high school, Absegami High School. Galloway
Township is also home to the Richard Stockton University and the Mainland
Campus of the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, a 323-bed, full-service
Hospital. Galloway Township is considered one of the fastest growing
Communities in the State of New Jersey.
The Galloway Township Police Department currently consists of 68 sworn
Law enforcement officers. The Department is comprised of 4 divisions:
(Administration, Patrol, Criminal Investigations and Professional Standards)
- Newly hired police officers are assigned to the patrol division
- Newly hired police officers are issued their initial complement of
uniforms and receive an annual uniform allowance, after that. - The Patrol Division is comprised of 4 Patrol Squads, the K-9 Unit
and the Traffic Safety Unit. - The Patrol Division currently works rotating twelve-hour shifts on
the Pitman 2-3-2 work schedule. - Officers are assigned a vehicle and Officers residing within the
Township are permitted to take their assigned vehicles home.
Requirements
Applicants MUST:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age*
- Be a high school graduate or equivalent
- Have a safe driving record and possess a valid New Jersey Driver's License at the time of appointment
- Read and write English proficiently
- Be of sound moral character
- Pass a physical fitness test
- Pass oral interview(s)
- Have NO criminal record
- Pass an extensive background investigation
Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicants MUST:
- Pass a psychological examination
- Pass a medical examination
- Pass a drug screening
- Be a resident of the State of New Jersey
*NJPFRS restrictions may apply to applicants over thirty-five (35) years of age.
Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for a new police officer is $48,800 per year, as of January 1, 2023.
Vacation Time:
- 1st Year of Service: Eight (8) hours for every month of service
- Two (2) to Five (5) Years of Service: Nine (9) Days
- Five (5) to Ten (10) Years of Service: Eleven (11) Days
- Ten (10) to Fifteen (15) Years of Service: Thirteen (13) Days
- Fifteen (15) to Twenty (20) Years of Service: Fifteen (15) Days
- Upon Completion of Twenty (20) Years of Service (and thereafter): Seventeen (17) Days
Personal Time:
- Thirty-Six (36) Hours of Personal Leave (Per Year) in the Patrol Division
The Township of Galloway provides health insurance, prescription drug, dental, and vision insurance.
Galloway Township police officers are enrolled in the New Jersey Police and Firemen's Retirement System.
